Description
In a base containing Honey
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is a cough
suppressant used for the relief of non-productive cough; it has a central action
on the cough center in the medulla.
Chlorpheniramine maleate is an antihistamine. The mechanism of antitussive
action involves reduction in cholinergic nerve transmission and from their
sedative effects. Reduction of nasal secretions is of value in cough associated
with post nasal drip. Antihistamines should not be used to treat productive
coughs because reduction in bronchial secretions may cause formation of
viscid mucous plugs.
Honey is a demulcent and an indirect peripherally acting cough suppressant.
It forms a protective coating over sensory receptors in the pharynx preventing
the cough reflex from reaching the brain thus preventing from coughing.
